Shadows Beneath the Rain: A Tale of Heartbreak and Healing

Chapter 2: The Silence Between Us

Stella’s words lingered like a ghost on Cecilia’s mind, replaying with cruel clarity: “Nathaniel, it must have been a difficult few years for you. I know you don’t love her. We’re meeting tonight. I miss you so much.”

The glow of Cecilia’s phone faded, but the weight of the message remained. A cold numbness gripped her as she hailed a taxi and gave the driver directions to Nathaniel’s office. The relentless rain blurred the city lights outside the window, the droplets racing each other down the glass. The sound of the storm was a steady hum, a rhythm that matched her anxious heartbeat.

Nathaniel disliked unannounced visits to his workplace, but Cecilia had no choice. She entered through the back service elevator, her quiet footsteps echoing in the sterile corridor. The man’s assistant, Marcelo Sanders, greeted her indifferently, offering a terse “Mrs. Smith.” His tone carried no warmth, only a faint disdain that reminded her of her invisible status within the Rainsworth family.

Inside Nathaniel’s sleek, modern office, his sharp eyes landed on the phone in Cecilia’s hand. His expression darkened.

“Didn’t I tell you not to bring me things I’ve forgotten?” His voice was clipped, his irritation barely masked.

Cecilia’s fingers tightened around the phone. “I’m sorry. I forgot…” Her voice faltered, her thoughts spiraling back to Stella’s message.

She wanted to ask him, but the words stuck in her throat. Finally, she mustered her courage. “Do you still have feelings for Stella?”

Nathaniel froze, his brows furrowing in confusion before annoyance overtook his features. “If you have too much free time, find something useful to do,” he replied curtly, dismissing her concern with cold indifference.

Her question hung unanswered, the silence between them growing heavier. Cecilia felt the familiar sting of rejection as he turned away, his disinterest cutting deeper than his words.

When she returned home, the emptiness of the house was suffocating. She tried to distract herself by cleaning and scrubbing every surface until her hands ached. It was a hollow effort, a desperate attempt to prove her worth in a world that seemed determined to strip her of it.

Hours passed, and the day surrendered to the night. Still, Nathaniel did not message. The house grew quieter, the shadows deeper, until the shrill ring of her phone pierced the silence.

Cecilia answered hesitantly, the unfamiliar number sending a chill down her spine.

“Ceci, are you there?” Stella’s syrupy voice coiled through the line. “Nathaniel is drunk. Can you come and get him?”
