What Is Rainmeter?

Rainmeter is a program designed for customizing a Windows computer. It facilitates a desktop interface and manages the library with preset and personalized skin. Unlike Microsoft Widgets, Rainmeter provides access to text files so users can make changes in the codes.

A lot of times people use Rainmeter to create a fantastic information resource on their computer. It has three major categories including system information, an app launcher, and information display.

Users can configure these three things to set up their desired display and settings.

The informative display and system information make the desktop experience better. There’s no need to open and load apps, as you can  launch everything at once thanks to Rainmeter’s settings.

The good thing is, Rainmeter is an open-source program and can be downloaded from their website. All latest updates on the software are posted so you can easily build skins from the source code

Getting Started

Once the program is installed, basic things like CPU usage will be displayed, as well as disc information, time, and date. This is the default skin of Rainmeter that you can customize depending on your preferences

Finding and Creating Skins

Rainmeter’s default skin is simple and basic. You can customize it or simply find a new skin from DeviantArt,, or a subreddit. Choosing the Top — All Time filter gives you popular and best skins and layouts.

Note that you can download ready or already built skins from the mentioned sites to match your desktop preference. Alternatively, you can simply create one and customize your desktop.

To install a skin from the mentioned sites, follow these steps.

  1. Double click on the .rmskin file until a window pops up.
  2. Allow installation and enable skin.
  3. Choose Load included skins to not load everything at once. Rainmeter will just add them to the list of skins available.
  4. Choose Install.

To make quick changes on the skins, you can simply right-click on it and click Edit Skin. This option will bring up a configuration file or text file filled with codes.

While it may look complicated for beginners, you can start by watching tutorials online to change colors, the position of apps or information, and other things.  By changing the values in the file, you can change the controls, colors, loading order, transparency level, on-hover actions, frame’s coordinates, and other options.
