How to Reboot a Cable Box

Given the waves of different streaming services that are currently storming the modern market, it comes as no surprise that the classic cable boxes are now becoming rare. After all, not only is cable expensive but setting up the box, along with the cords, can be quite laborious.

However, despite these disadvantages, it remains undeniable that many are still clinching tight to their clunky cable boxes. In fact, only five years ago, tech companies are still pushing the Federal Communications Commission to open up the cable-box market in hope of reviving and improving the industry.

If you’re one among the many who chose to remain faithful to their humble cable boxes, chances are you’ve already encountered situations where you’ve been compelled to reboot the service. From unresponsive videos, blank screens, to slow program loading, there is a range of reasons why you might need to reboot a cable box. To help you with that, here is a guide on how you can safely and properly do so.

Ways To Reboot A Cable Box

Method #1: Via The Cable Box Menu

Perhaps, rebooting your cable box using your remote’s menu option is the easiest way to get things done. To do so, simply follow these steps below.

  • Step 1: Turn on your TV and cable box.
  • Step 2: Get the remote and click on the button that says “Menu.” From there, a pop-up menu should show up on your TV screen.
  • Step 3: Using the arrow buttons, look for an option that says Settings or Support and click OK.
  • Step 4: After clicking the OK or Enter button, a new menu box should pop up on your TV screen. Look for the option that says Reset or Restart. Click OK or Enter.
  • Step 5: Wait until your cable box reboots completely.

Method #2: Via The Manual Reset Button

Of course, there may be some situations where you won’t be able to do the first method, such as a frozen screen or a missing remote. If that’s the case, you are able to reboot your cable box by turning to the manual reset button usually located on the front or back of your cable box. To do so, simply follow these steps below.

  • Step 1: Find the reset button on your cable box. In most cases, this button is located on the front or side part of the device. However, in case you can’t see it in the mentioned areas, try exploring every part of the box, especially at the back panel near the power cords. Once you’ve found it, simply press the button until the box’s display or lights turn off.

*If you can’t still find the reset button, simply press the power button on the cable box until the lights turn off.

  • Step 2: Wait until the rebooting is complete. You may either observe the lights on the display blinking or see a loading icon on your TV screen. Don’t touch any buttons and wait for the reboot to be completed. This might take about 5 to 10 minutes.

Method #3: Via Unplugging The Cable Box

Lastly, if neither of the rebooting methods discussed above did the job of fixing your cable box, you may turn to the last resort, which is to unplug the device from its power source. To do so, here are the steps you need to follow.

  • Step 1: Unplug the power cable from the outlet. Take note that you must grab the plug by its base and not by its cord to prevent any possible accident from occurring.
  • Step 2: Wait for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Step 3: Plug the cable back into the outlet.
  • Step 4: Press the power button on the cable box to reboot the device.

Who says you need to join the bandwagon by cutting the cable cord? With the right rebooting methods and techniques, any issue is sure to be fixed in no time. From programs not loading and videos freezing to screens going blank, there is a range of seemingly big issues that can be quickly resolved by simply performing a quick reboot.
