The CEO's Game: A Love Bound by Power

Chapter 6: Boundaries Blurred

Vashti stood frozen, her hand still on the doorknob after Adonis left. The echo of his words, “Don’t keep me waiting too long,” lingered like a challenge she couldn’t shake.

Her emotions churned—anger, confusion, and something she refused to name. She pressed her palm to her forehead, leaning against the closed door.

What did he expect her to do? Swoon into his arms like some naive damsel? The thought ignited her frustration. “He’s unbelievable,” she muttered, pacing the small apartment. The nerve of him to show up at her door, to act as if he could command her life. But beneath the anger, there was a dangerous flicker of curiosity. Why couldn’t he stay away?

Hours passed, and Vashti's mind wandered back to Adonis despite her best efforts to focus on her job applications. The memory of his touch sent an unbidden warmth through her, and she hated herself. She closed her laptop with a snap, deciding she needed a distraction.

As she prepared for bed, her phone buzzed on the nightstand. The screen lit up with an unknown number. Her heart skipped as she read the message:

“You’re thinking about me, aren’t you?”

Vashti stared at the message, her pulse quickening. She wanted to ignore it, but her fingers betrayed her.

“Don’t flatter yourself.”

The response came almost instantly:

“Liar.”

She groaned, tossing her phone onto the bed. Adonis was impossible, yet she couldn’t deny the thrill his persistence stirred in her. But she wouldn’t let him win. Not this time.

The following day, Vashti entered the office with her head held high. She refused to let Adonis’ presence rattle her. The receptionist glanced at her with a knowing smile as she passed the front desk.

“Good morning, Miss Phillips,” the woman said with an odd lilt.

Vashti frowned but offered a polite nod. She headed straight to her desk, determined to dive into work and avoid unnecessary interactions. Yet, no matter how much she tried to focus, her thoughts were a mess.

By mid-afternoon, an email popped up on her screen. The sender: Adonis MacGyver. Her stomach twisted as she opened it.

Subject: Meeting

Message: Conference Room B. Now.

Her hands trembled as she read the curt message. Part of her wanted to ignore it, but she knew she couldn’t. She gathered her composure and walked toward the conference room, her heels clicking sharply against the floor.

Adonis was already inside, leaning casually against the table. His tie was loose, and his sleeves were rolled up, exposing muscular forearms. His eyes lit up when he saw her, though his expression remained unreadable.

“Close the door,” he said, his voice calm but firm.

Vashti hesitated before complying, her heart pounding in her chest. “What is this about?” she asked, crossing her arms.
