Chapter 3: Boundaries and Temptations

Steam curled around Vashti as she stood in the shower, letting the hot water wash away the tension from the previous night. Her thoughts wandered as she scrubbed her skin, the memory of her enigmatic boss flickering in her mind.
Gorgeous, undeniably so, but the type of man who seemed born to test her patience. She set her alarm for early the following day; being late wasn’t an option, especially not with someone like him.
Her night was restless, filled with fragmented dreams that left her flushed and confused. When her alarm blared, Vashti groaned, slamming the snooze button more than once before finally dragging herself out of bed.
She stared at her reflection in the mirror, the faint shadows under her eyes betraying her late at night. A sharp regret hit her as she remembered the drinks she’d indulged in. “If only I’d known I’d have work today,” she muttered, shaking her head.
Her thoughts spiraled as she dressed, pulling on a fitted black sheath dress that accentuated her figure while maintaining a professional edge.
She told herself it wasn’t for him, but her grandmother’s voice echoed: “Always look your best because a woman’s honor is reflected in her appearance.” Vashti couldn’t bring herself to argue with that wisdom.
She tied her hair into a loose bun, swiped concealer under her eyes, and stepped out the door purposefully. The subway ride was uneventful, her mind preoccupied with the day ahead.
By the time she reached the office, the world seemed to slow. Heidi greeted her warmly, guiding her to her desk with a smile that carried curiosity she didn’t voice. Vashti, in turn, smiled back but offered no explanations.
The hours ticked by uneventfully until Heidi approached her late in the afternoon. “Vashti, could you review this document for me?” Heidi’s voice carried a mix of desperation and hope.
“Of course,” Vashti replied, her genuine smile reassuring. She settled in, tackling the task with the same diligence that had earned her the job in the first place. The office grew quiet as people filtered out, immersing Vashti in her work.
The silence was startling when she finally stood to grab a cup of coffee. The empty floor stretched out like a ghost town. As she leaned against the counter, eyes closed, a hand slipped around her waist. Vashti’s breath caught, her heart racing.
“Calm down,” a deep, familiar voice murmured, brushing against her ear. The warmth of his breath sent shivers down her spine.
“M-Mr. MacGyver?” she stammered, her hands instinctively moving to his, attempting to pry them away. But he didn’t budge; instead, he pulled her closer.
“You smell incredible,” Adonis whispered, his nose grazing the curve of her neck before pressing a kiss against her skin. Vashti froze, her mind scrambling for a response.
