Adonis pushed off the table, stepping closer. “This is about us.”
“There is no us,” she shot back. “You made that clear when you threw me out of your car.”
His jaw tightened. “I was wrong. I overreacted. And I’m sorry.”
Vashti blinked, caught off guard by his admission. She had expected arrogance, not contrition. “What are you trying to say, Adonis?”
He ran a hand through his hair, his confidence faltering. “I’m saying I can’t stop thinking about you. You’ve gotten under my skin, Vashti. And I don’t know how to handle it.”
Her breath caught. She had dreamed of hearing these words, but they felt overwhelming now that they were here. “Adonis…”
He stepped closer, his eyes searching hers. “I’m not asking for anything right now. I just needed you to know. Whatever you decide, I’ll respect it.”
Vashti stared at him, her emotions a whirlwind. She wanted to believe him, but doubt lingered. She had been burned before, and Adonis was dangerous in ways she couldn’t ignore.
“I need time,” she said finally, her voice steady despite the storm inside her.
He nodded, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “Take all the time you need. I’m not going anywhere.”
As Vashti left the conference room, her mind raced with possibilities. For the first time in days, she felt a sliver of hope—and a heavy dose of uncertainty.
