“Adonis,” she began, her voice steady, “you’ve been honest, and I appreciate that. But I can’t ignore how you make me feel—like I’m losing control of who I am. I need to figure out what I want, and I can’t do that with you in my life.”
His jaw tightened, but he nodded. “I understand.”
“I hope you do,” she said softly. “Because this isn’t easy for me either.”
They finished the evening in quiet conversation, sharing stories of their pasts and laughter that felt bittersweet. When the bill came, Adonis insisted on paying, and as they stepped outside, the cold night air enveloped them.
“So, this is goodbye?” he asked, his hands buried in his pockets.
Vashti hesitated, her breath visible in the chilly air. “For now,” she said. “Maybe one day, when we’re both in different places…”
He smiled faintly, though his eyes betrayed his sadness. “Take care of yourself, Vashti.”
“You too, Adonis.”
She turned and walked away, her heart heavy but her steps steady. As she rounded the corner, she allowed herself one glance back. Adonis stood under the streetlamp, watching her go, his silhouette a mixture of strength and sorrow. She turned away, a tear slipping down her cheek, but a sense of peace settled over her. She had made the right choice.
Vashti threw herself into her work and her grandmother’s care in the following days. Adonis kept his distance, true to his word. Occasionally, she’d catch herself thinking of him—his smirk, intensity, and how he made her feel alive and unsteady all at once. But she knew she needed this time to rediscover herself.
As for Adonis, he poured his energy into the company, but he couldn’t forget Vashti. Her absence was a constant ache, but he respected her decision. Deep down, he hoped their paths might cross again when the timing was right.
Under the same sky, in two different worlds, Vashti and Adonis carried the memories of their brief but profound connection—a reminder of what they’d shared and the lessons they’d learned. Sometimes, love wasn’t about holding on. It was about letting go and hoping the journey would return to where it began.
